Polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT) is a type of abnormal heart rhythm characterized by a rapid, irregular heartbeat originating in the heart's lower chambers, or ventricles. Ventricular tachycardia is defined as three or more consecutive premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) occurring at a rate of more than 100 beats per minute.

The term "polymorphic" means that the shape and duration of the QRS complexes (the electrical signals associated with ventricular depolarization) on an electrocardiogram (ECG) vary from beat to beat. This is in contrast to monomorphic ventricular tachycardia, where the QRS complexes all look similar.

Polymorphic VT can be caused by various underlying heart conditions or factors, including:

1. *Coronary artery disease:* Reduced blood flow to the heart muscle can lead to abnormal electrical signals in the heart, triggering polymorphic VT.

2. *Cardiomyopathy:* Diseases of the heart muscle can disrupt the heart's electrical system, leading to ventricular arrhythmias like polymorphic VT.

3. *Long QT syndrome:* This is a genetic disorder that affects the heart's electrical activity, potentially leading to polymorphic VT and sudden cardiac arrest.

4. *Electrolyte imbalances:* Abnormal levels of potassium, calcium, or magnesium in the blood can disrupt the heart's rhythm and contribute to polymorphic VT.

5. *Medications:* Certain medications, especially those that affect the heart's electrical conduction, can increase the risk of polymorphic VT.

6. *Structural heart defects:* Congenital heart defects or acquired heart valve problems can create conditions conducive to ventricular arrhythmias.

Polymorphic VT is a serious condition that can lead to fainting, dizziness, and, in severe cases, sudden cardiac arrest. Treatment often involves addressing the underlying cause (such as correcting electrolyte imbalances or adjusting medications) and may include antiarrhythmic medications, implantable cardioverterdefibrillator (ICD) placement, or other cardiac interventions based on the specific situation of the patient.

It's crucial for individuals with known heart conditions or risk factors to work closely with healthcare professionals to manage their heart health and reduce the risk of lifethreatening arrhythmias like polymorphic VT.
