Relaxing walking tour of Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal, with detailed historical information and context. Vila Franca de Xira, located just 30 km (19 miles) northeast of Lisbon, on the bank of the Tagus River, is famous for the unswerving loyalty of the fans of bullfighting, which takes place between April and October almost every weekend in the city's bullring.

The bullfights and running of the bulls in the streets are an essential feature of the main festivals of the region, such as the October Fair and the Festival of the Colete Encarnado (Red Waistcoat), which is held every year in June. This is also the region where the legendary Lusitano horse is bred.
