Vila Nova de Cerveira

Portuguese border village in Viana do Castelo district
The municipality is limited to the northeast by the municipality of Valença, to the east by Paredes de Coura, to the southeast by Ponte de Lima, to the southwest by Caminha and to the northwest by Galicia.
The "Deer" assumed itself as a symbol of Vila Nova de Cerveira, (deer), and the coat of arms of the municipality also bears the image of that animal.

Bordered by the course of the river Minho, it rises on its left bank, in front of Spain, covering the defensive line of Alto Minho.
King D. Dinis, in order to expand the population of the region, tried to attract couples to Cerveira (1317), granting him a Charter that transformed it into a village (Vila Nova de Cerveira)
The castle has an oval shape, typical of the Gothic style, with stone walls crowned by battlements, covered by adarve, reinforced by eight quadrangular turrets, highlighting the remains of one of the old boulders and the vestiges of the old keep
The medieval castle was refurbished, and its facilities were partially adapted to hotel functions in 1982 (Pousada de D. Dinis), integrating the Pousadas de Portugal network until its deactivation in 2008
Very close to the center of Vila Nova de Cerveira, in Serra da Gávea, we find the remaining ruins of the Espírito Santo Chapel, of which there is only the entrance portico, on the front facade and two stone alignments.

O Rei D. Dinis, visando alargar o povoamento da região, tentou atrair casais para Cerveira (1317), outorgandolhe Carta de Foral que a transformava em vila (Vila Nova de Cerveira)
O castelo apresenta planta com a forma ovalada, típica do estilo gótico, com muralhas em aparelho de pedra coroadas por ameias, percorridas por adarve, reforçadas por oito cubelos de planta quadrangular, destacandose os restos de um dos antigos matacães e os vestígios da antiga torre de menagem
O castelo medieval foi requalificado, tendo as suas instalações sido parcialmente adaptadas a funções hoteleiras em 1982 (Pousada de D. Dinis), integrando a rede Pousadas de Portugal até a sua desativação em 2008
Muito próximo do centro de Vila Nova de Cerveira, na Serra da Gávea, encontramos as ruínas remanescentes da Capela do Espírito Santo da qual apenas existe o pórtico de entrada, na fachada frontal e dois alinhamentos em pedra.
