This time I'm visiting the Scottish island with a dark history. While most visitors to Scotland flock to the famous Isle of Skye, only a 25minute ferry ride away lies a lesserknown island. This beautiful, wild and rugged island has a rich but somber history shaped by centuries of Gaelic culture and the Highland Clearances.

The Isle of Raasay once had a population of around a thousand, but a series of bad landowners in the 19th century evicted everyone from the fertile south. This forced people to emigrate or make a living in the barren north and nearby islands.

Most of Raasay became a sheep farm, then a sporting estate. The few remaining residents were confined to the north behind a high stonebuilt wall. Entire villages, including Hallaig were abandoned. It wasn’t until the 1920s that the government and landowners were shamed by land raids and public outcry into allowing resettlement in the south.

In this video, I catch the Calmac Raasay ferry to explore the Isle of Raasay. I visit the Isle of Raasay distillery, the main settlement of Inverarish, the abandoned village of Hallaig, Calum's Road and I hike the wild and rugged north of the island to reach the Raasay bothy.

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!
