V/Line Passenger Trains at Melton during Peak Hour - Melbourne Transport

In this video we visit Melton, a station on the Ballarat Line on Melbourne's western outskirts. With a population of around 76,000 Melton was once considered a satellite city of Melbourne, but is slowly but surely being encroached by Melbourne's expansive urban sprawl.

Here we see some trains at the station during the afternoon peak; filmed roughly between 3:40pm 6:20pm. We mostly see various V/Line Vlocity DMU's but despite this Melton surprised me as things were a lot more interesting than I expected. We see express trains at speed, a dividing movement where a train splits into half, and a shunting move into the adjacent siding. On top of this we also see some of the remaining N Class locomotivehauled commuter trains to Bacchus Marsh hauling sixcar H Sets. N Classes were once synonymous with Bacchus Marsh commuter runs but in recent times are beginning to be phased out as more Vlocity DMU's enter service.

Melton station opened on the 2nd April 1884 when the line from Sunshine to Melton was constructed. The station building on platform 2 was constructed in 1898 and is a rare example of an intact Victorian Railways 'Kaniva' style station building and is heritage listed. Platform 1 was provided in 1991 and was upgraded in 2021 with additional shelters and other amenities. Melton station will be rebuilt below ground in a trench by 2026 as part of a grade separation project to remove the two level crossings at Coburns Road and Exford Road.
