The Volkswagen Amarok has been a favourite in the Australian ute segment for more than a decade now. It might not sell in the same numbers as models like the Toyota HiLux and Isuzu DMax, but it has a dedicated and loyal following.
A couple of years ago VW announced that it would partner with Ford on commercial vehicles and that included a new Amarok that would be based on the very successful Ford Ranger.
After years of planning, it's just months from arriving in Australian VW dealerships. Come April, grades like the Style, PanAmericana and Aventura will be on sale, with the Core and Life arriving midyear.
But has VW done enough to stand apart from the Ranger it is based on?
Tim Nicholson travelled to South Africa where the new Amarok will be built to find out if the new Amarok measures up against the best utes in the segment.
