When I first saw the trailer for The Northman (2022) my initial reaction was "oh great, yet another generic revenge story", and I expected them to butcher Viking Age culture and equipment, stripping any semblance of historical accuracy, replacing it with tired old fantasy tropes.

But I was wrong. The movie is surprisingly realistic and well researched. Also entertaining, well directed and acted overall.
