24.07.2024 On this walk, we will travel along the levada, simply strolling and enjoying life. We'll immerse ourselves in the natural sounds, birdsong, and the abundance of flowers. The scenery will shift from nature to small settlements, with local residents working in the fields, a superstar dog, and, of course, we can't forget the pink toilet!

If you're interested, I can tell you a bit more about the levadas themselves. I, for example, saw them for the first time.

Levadas are a unique system of irrigation channels on the island of Madeira, Portugal. They’re one of the island's main tourist and natural attractions. Here are some cool facts about levadas:

1. Historical Background: Levadas started being built in the 15th century, around the time when the island was colonized. They were originally designed to transport water from the rainy northern parts to the drier southern areas where farms and settlements were located.

2. Length: The total length of the levadas is about 2500 kilometers, which is pretty impressive for such a small island.

3. Technical Challenges: Building the levadas was a tough and dangerous job. They often run along steep slopes, through gorges, and even through tunnels. Some are at high altitudes and require specialized skills for maintenance and repairs.

4. Ecological Importance: Levadas play a crucial role in the island's ecosystem by maintaining moisture in the forests and fields, providing water for various plant and animal species.

5. Tourist Trails: Levadas have become popular hiking trails. Walking along them offers breathtaking views of Madeira’s nature, including laurel forests, waterfalls, and panoramic ocean vistas.

6. Variety of Trails: There are lots of different levada trails, varying in length and difficulty. Some are perfect for family walks, while others are more suited for experienced hikers.

7. Educational Value: Levadas are also used to teach about the island’s history and ecology, as they are a great example of sustainable resource management.

Madeira’s levadas are not just an important engineering and natural feature but also a cultural heritage that reflects the island’s rich history and traditions.
