The motorization of infantry and the lessons of WW2 led to the emergence of infantry fighting vehicles, or IFVs: a new class of machines sitting somewhere in between transport vehicles and light tanks. In 1966, the Soviet Union adopted the BMP1, and in 1969, West Germany completed the development of the Marder. Similar programs were also initiated in the United States and the United Kingdom, but their development faced significant difficulties.
