Join us to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Washington New Town, as we take a trip through time with the North East Film Archive.

‘Washington on Film’ offers a rare opportunity to view the town through a filmmaker’s lens, exploring its changing landscapes, landmarks, local events, and most importantly, its people: at school, at work, at play.

Highlights include ‘Washington Tomorrow’, a promotional film made in 1966 to celebrate the past, and look ahead to the new town of the future; ‘The Washington Way’, which includes the opening of the Galleries shopping centre by Princess Anne in 1975; footage of President Jimmy Carter’s historic 1977 visit; the launch of the very first Bluebird from the assembly line at Nissan’s car plant, plus much, much more.

Who knows – you might even spot a familiar face!

This event is part of Washington 60 – celebrating 60 years of Washington New Town.

Arts Centre Washington’s Film Programme is supported by Film Hub North with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network.

Heritage Reels is supported by Yorkshire and North East Film Archives.
