Terms Discussed:

Filler: A substance such as chalk or kaolin used to make paint cheaper. Reduces the translucency of the paint and can cause paint to become opaque.
Pigment: The ground up color used in paint.
Binder: The substance used to cause the paint to stick.
Vehicle: What makes the paint wet and malleable.
Pan Paint: A paint that is sold in a pan.
Tube Paint: Paint that is sold in a tube.
Extruded Pan Paint: Pan paint that has been created by forming a paste that is then chopped up and dropped into pans. Cheaper and less pigmented.
Poured Pan Paint: Paint that is poured into the pan when liquid. More expensive and less consistent in sizing, more pigmented.
Granulation: A desirable quality in watercolor paint where the pigment settles into the grooves in the paper to create a mottled effect.
