One year ago, we decided to cover half of our vegetable garden in wood chips with the Back to Eden method of gardening. We try to grow as much of our own food as possible but keeping up on the weeding with large gardens is almost impossible. Usually, by midsummer, we give up and the weeds take over, but this means they can choke out some of the plants. I really wanted to try the wood chip mulch to see how it worked but my husband didn't want to risk all of our gardens in case it didn't turn out. Here's what it looks like after one full year, what we think, the pros, the cons, and what we're doing moving forward.
