We test the new BMW X1 xDrive20i M Sport, which is the most expensive way to spec an X1 until the iX1 arrives and we find the cheaper base model is better.

The BMW X1 is a small luxury SUV that has just been renewed for a third generation. It is available with a range of petrol engines or fully electric power in the iX1. We have already tested the base model X1 sDrive18i threecylinder (and liked it), but you don’t get quite the same pleasure from the X1 xDrive20i M Sport, as Chasing Cars deputy editor Curt Dupriez identifies.

The BMW X1 competes with the Audi Q3, MercedesBenz GLA, Jaguar EPace, Lexus NX, Range Rover Evoque, Volvo XC40 and other small luxury crossovers.
