Weak Serratus Anterior? It's probably not...

I’m probably going to ruffle a few feathers, but that’s ok!

Because I don’t care

The Serratus Anterior muscle originates at your ribs and inserts on the inside edge of your scapula (shoulder blade). It helps to stabilise the shoulder blade and assists moving it when you lift your arm, but it’s primary function is pulling your shoulder blade forwards, around your ribs (protracting your shoulder).

If you genuinely do have an issue with that muscle and have been told as such by a medical professional, then this video is not for you.

But, over the years I have met so many people OBSESSED with having a weak Serratus Anterior and how it’s the cause of all of their shoulder problems when the actual issue was their training and scapula control.

In reality, the Serratus Anterior was the least of their worries. They literally couldn’t move their shoulder properly, with control, at different angles.

I’m just gonna say it: most people with shoulder issues have too much protraction (rounded shoulders) no thoracic mobility (stiff upper back) and often training typically consists of things like, bench press, push ups and bicep curls.

This is why you must consider your training when assessing your pain. Blaming one muscle for all your problems is incredibly silly, maybe, just maybe, it’s what you’re doing (or not doing) all day & in the gym that’s causing dysfunction in the entire, complicated, messy world of your body.

So rather than faffing around with weird, banded roller up the wall drills... assess your thoracic mobility and training first! How well can you move your shoulders? What are you missing out on?

Here’s some ideas for where to start!
