So first of all what was this transfer process like of moving $20,000 worth of investments into Wealthfront and more importantly why did I do this? Well to answer the first part of the question, to be quite blunt it was incredibly easy to transfer my entire Roth IRA from TD Ameritrade to Wealthfront. Essentially when you open your Wealthfront Roth IRA, they’re going to ask you how you would like to fund this account and there's an option that allows you to select a fund from an existing IRA. From there, they notify the company that you're transferring from which in my case was TD Ameritrade, TD Ameritrade then authorized that transfer sent the money over and Wealthfront automatically invested that money for me in the portfolio that I selected.

But why did I decide to do this when I had a handpicked portfolio that I have spent years creating with TD Ameritrade. Well honestly for me personally, it comes down to one reason and that is time. As a fulltime student who now spends countless hours making three of these videos each week, I just don't have as much time to monitor my investments and ensure that my longterm financial goals are staying on track. And even putting that aside, I seriously buy into the foundational principles of Wealthfront as far as the consistent contributions and more importantly the way in which they divide up your portfolio. Plus, the fact that all of this is done for you and you get the advantage of some of those other higher end investing strategies which we talked about in the original review for one low fee means this was kind of a no brainer for me.

While there are a ton of different options because of the different risk scores, overall all of these portfolios are divided up pretty similarly and the amount that is put in each category is just changed slightly depending on what your risk score is. For example, the 5 score portfolio is heavily invested in municipal bonds at 35% with just 26% in US stocks Whereas the 10 score portfolio has just 4% in municipal bonds and 35% in US stocks with an additional 30% in foreign stocks. Wealthfront is also much more upfront about where your money is going and truly wants you to have a clear understanding of where your money is being invested and more importantly why. I also encourage you to check out some of the information on the taxloss harvesting strategies and some of the other strategies that they use in order to make sure that your money is being invested as effectively as possible.

And remember, you can also use their selfdriving money feature that can automatically take your paycheck, and divide it up to pay your bills, fund an emergency fund, put into a savings account, and perhaps most importantly invest a percentage in your various investment accounts whether that be regular investment account, a retirement account, or even something like a 529 college savings plan for your children. This allows you to truly automate everything from start to finish without you having to do anything and for me, that's largely the reason why I decided to invest this $20,000 with the Wealthfront platform and why I will likely continue to put more of my investments into this platform in the future.
