West Coast Main Line Trains at Preston on May 15th 2024

1st visit to Preston on the West Coast Main Line

Featuring services from Avanti West Coast, Northern, Transpennine Express and some freight

Preston station is 209 miles from London Euston and 194 miles from Glasgow Central was opened in August 1838 by the former North Union Railway

East Lancashire Platforms was added in 1850

Regarding Anglo / Scottish services it wasn't until 1863 when they could call at Preston as a stop to allow passengers to dine in the station dining room.

The station itself has had several rebuilds in its history firstly in July 1880 which most of station still remains intact to this day,

Other rebuilds occurred in 1903 and in 1913 when station had 15 platforms although nowadays thee are only 7 in use

During both World War I and World War II a free buffet was provided for the servicemen

The East Lancashire Platforms was demolished after its closure in 1972

Today a mixture of Intercity and local services are provided by Avanti West Coast to and from London Euston to destinations such as Glasgow Central, Edinburgh as well as few trains a day to and from Blackpool North which the latter two and Edinburgh going via Birmingham New Street

Class 390 Pendolinos having just had their mid life refurbishment by Alstom provide most of the services although in the coming months towards the end of 2024 and early 2025 new 7 car Class 807 Everos will share some of the Class 390 services with Birmingham New Street, Liverpool Lime Street and Blackpool North.

Northern electric services provided to and from Blackpool North originate to and from Manchester Airport via Bolton and Liverpool Lime Street via St Helens Central and occasionally NewtonleWillows nowadays operated by Class 331s.

DMU workings provide the Blackpool South, Colne, Ormskirk with Class 150 and 156 Sprinters as well as Manchester Airport to Windermere and BarrowinFurness provided by Class 195s.

Transpennine Express provide the other services to and from Manchester Airport to Glasgow Central and Edinburgh operated by Class 397s and occasionally Class 802 Novas although some can operate to and from Liverpool Lime Street which are only around 2 3 trains a day.

Caledonian Sleeper services to and from London Euston are provided during the night time with services to Fort William on the West Highland Line, Aberdeen and Inverness on the Highland Main Line which all divide or split at Edinburgh.

The carriages are MK5s and are hauled by Class 73s for non electrified routes to and from Edinburgh and then a Class 92 locomotive takes over to London Euston

In the future Grand Union Trains in June 2025 will provide 5 return services a day between London Euston and Stirling which at the time of filming its not known what trains will be used although its hinted in the short term will be Class 22x workings either some from the Avanti 221s being replaced by Class 805 Everos or potentially Class 222 Meridians which are due to start being replaced by Class 810 Auroras on East Midlands Railway from January 2025.
