What are kidney stones? Kidney stones, also known as nephrolithiasis or urolithiasis, are solid mineral and salt deposits that form in your kidneys. These crystals or stones can vary in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball. The process of stone formation typically starts when the urine contains high concentrations of crystalforming substances, such as calcium, oxalate, and uric acid. As these substances become more concentrated, they can begin to crystallize. At the same time, your urine may lack substances that prevent crystals from sticking together, creating an ideal environment for kidney stones to form. Over time, these tiny crystals can attract other elements and grow larger, forming what we recognize as kidney stones.
