Fluids can be categorised based on how they behave when a force is applied, and fluids can be considered as Newtonian or nonNewtonian. Fluids such as water, air, thin oils, petrol and solvents are classed as Newtonian fluids as the rate of deformation is proportional to the shear stress, however, most fluids such as adhesives, greases and toothpaste are nonNewtonian, which means the relationship between shear stress and rate of deformation is not linear.
