In this first second video in my Coherence Therapy series, we take a deeper look at schemas, particularly how they are structured. Schemas generally consist of two component parts: one that knows about the nature of some suffering or problem and how to anticipate its arrival, and the other that knows how to avoid or manage that suffering. In this video I go over how understanding the structure of schemas helps us know how to work with them clinically. In other words, we can chose to update the schema in relation to its predictions around danger or suffering, or we can update the schema around how it has learned to prevent that danger or suffering (in other words, updating the 'solution side' of the schema).
When we can update our schemas using memory reconsolidation, it is possible to achieve transformational change. That is why understanding schemas is so critical to helping our clients, particularly those who have experienced trauma. This is the goal of Coherence Therapy, although it can be achieved through many different experiential therapies. For instance, the basic structure of schemas described in this video does match onto how IFS conceptualizing the two main types of parts (exilesthat hold the memory of the suffering itself; and protector partsthat hold the knowledge of how to avoid that suffering).
