What are the 3 things that calisthenics can learn from powerlifting?
Calisthenics is a very intriguing but also confusing subject in fitness. It seems to lay in between completely two different approaches of training, this fact, general access and relatively new trends are the cause of contradictions and misunderstaning.
I very often see its being put to the group of activities like tricking, acrobatics or breakdancing. The idea and training methodology in these sports is surely different then in weight training. Because it is mainly dependent on skill aqusition, training is not as strict and much more intuitive. Thats just a nature of developing skill. If you learn a backflip for instance you most likely dont do sets and reps of different exercises but you drill the technique by constant practise with paying atention to different cues. Approaching the bodyweight training in this way in most cases may be detremental. You see the nature of calisthenics is dual, meaning while there is lots of skill and practise involved Ironically, this form of training has much more in common with strength sports and the perfect example might be powerlifting. Lack of basic strength training priiciples application and approaching bodyweight skills like tricks
is not the efficient way to make improvements.
To raise the awareness i decided to bring to the light 3 things that we as calisthenics athletes may learn from powerlifters and their general approach to training. By introducing some of these things and strategies we can greatly benefit in all areas of our sport, break plateus and get a wider perspective of the training process...
