The main sections of the spine are the cervical spine, thoracic spine, and lumbar spine. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body; it originates from the lumbar spine and extends down into the hips, legs, and into the foot. You can feel sciatic pain anywhere along the pathway of the nerve, but most commonly, it is low back, hip, leg, and foot pain. It is most common to affect the left side. Normally sciatica is an asymmetrical type of problem.

Sciatica symptoms are very case specific and can range from mild discomfort to chronic and can be very debilitating. It is most commonly associated with lumbar and radicular pain.

What causes sciatica to flare up is based upon the causation and severity, but the most common is long periods of sitting in a bad posture. Flareups are driven by what is causing the pain to occur in the first place. The main cause is compression to the sciatic nerve driven by some type of misalignment followed by spinal stenosis and lumbar spine degeneration.

At The Scoliosis Reduction Center, we offer proactive treatment to deal with the causation, which is the alignment, not just dealing with the symptoms associated with sciatica. Unless the spine's alignment issues are treated, the compression or degeneration will worsen over time, and what the patient was feeling will usually return worse than what it was before.
