মতিয়া চৌধুরী যখন সরকারের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মন্ত্রী তখনই সিদ্ধান্ত গৃহীত হয়েছিলো বীর মুক্তিযোদ্ধাগণের মৃত্যুর পর রাষ্ট্রীয় মর্যাদায় তাঁদের দাফন আয়োজনের। বহু প্রান্তিক পর্যায়ের মুক্তিযোদ্ধা, নির্যাতিত নারী মুক্তিযোদ্ধা মৃত্যুর পর এই সম্মানটুকু পাচ্ছিলেন। স্থানীয় প্রশাসনের সর্ব্বোচ্চ ব্যক্তি বা তাঁর প্রতিনিধি রাষ্ট্রের পক্ষ থেকে পুস্পস্তবক অর্পণ করতেন এবং পুলিশ বাহিনী গান স্যালুট দিতো।
মতিয়া চৌধুরী কেবল একজন মুক্তিযোদ্ধাই ছিলেন না, বাংলাদেশ রাষ্ট্র অর্জনের সংগ্রামে অগ্রগণ্য ছাত্রনেতাদের অন্যতম। রাষ্ট্রীয় তথ্যভান্ডারে মুক্তিযোদ্ধা হিসাবে তাঁর নাম রয়ে গেছে এখনো। কিন্তু তাঁর শেষ বিদায়ে প্রাপ্য সম্মানটুকু দেয়ার সৌজন্য দেখায়নি রাষ্ট্র।
