I took the trip down to the Moorabbin Air Museum, located in the southeast of Melbourne. Located on site at Moorabbin Airport, the museum boasts a large collection of aircraft and related artefacts, all telling the story of aviation in Australia. Nearly everything on display has some link to the aviation history of Australia. What’s on display is only part of what the museum actually has in its collection, with much under restoration, in storage or in some cases on loan. The museum traces its history back to 1962 when a group titled the Australian Aircraft Restoration Group was formed from volunteers of the Aviation Historical Society of Australia. The group was formed with the intention of saving a DAP Beaufighter that faced being scrapped. Since then the museum has grown significantly and offers an intensive and unique insight into Australian aviation history.

Today's mission though was to view a Fokker Dr.I Triplane fuel tank on display. This tank is believed to have come from the downed aircraft of famous German ace Manfred Von Richthofen a.k.a the Red Baron. Even if you don't know much about World War One aviaton there is still probably a good chance you have heard of the Red Baron or know of his bright red coloured flying machine. In this video will trace the history of Manfred von Richthofen, the aircraft which he is most famous for flying, the Fokker Dr.I Triplane, and why this fuel tank at the Moorabbin Aviation Museum could be from his aircraft.
