▶ In this video I talk about the hypothetical scenario of the United States not having purchased the Louisiana Territory from the French. What if, even if it was the desire of Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon had not agreed to sell the territory to the US? Keeping it as a colony and eventually granting it independence, either through revolution or by choice? What would happen to North America with this gigantic new country within it? Would the United States still colonize the West and become a territorially divided nation? Or would it be limited to the East Coast with the West either being its own united country, or a combination of various nations such as California, Cascadia, Deseret and Texas? Would Canada be reconquered by the French and have a bigger French heritage today? And would Mexico be able to hold on to the West Coast territories longer, perhaps long enough to establish itself as the main power in place of the United States?
By attempting to answer this hypothetical question we understand how key this purchase was to the territorial expansion and development of the United States. Paving the way for it to become the regional power and global super power it is today, something that might not have happened in this alternative history scenario.
