What is a blood leak?

Blood leak: when blood leaks into the dialysate compartment inside the dialyzer/filter.

What to do?
Confirm it's a real blood leak with a test strip.

If confirmed, stop dialysis, DO NOT return the blood, and call the nurse.

Assess patients, take vital signs, and identify new symptoms.

If needed, replace fluid (rare, but possible). Draw blood samples for hemoglobin, RBC, etc.

When results are available report to the Nephrologist.

Epogen, (medication for red blood cell creation), may have to be increased or the patient may have to be transfused.
