A MERP is any IRSapproved health plan or arrangement where an organization reimburses employees for outofpocket medical expenses incurred by employees or their dependents. With an MERP, organizations typically offer an allowance of taxfree money instead of a traditional health benefit like group health insurance. However, you can use an MERP alongside a group health plan.

The definition of a MERP is relatively broad, so several different types of employerfunded medical reimbursement plans fall within this umbrella term.

Here are a few common ways employers use MERPs:
A standalone health reimbursement arrangement (HRA), like a qualified small employer HRA (QSEHRA) or individual coverage HRA (ICHRA)
An integrated HRA that pairs with a group health insurance plan
MERPs for vision and dental expenses
