What is A Posterior Tongue Tie?

Sarah Hornsby

What's a posterior tonguetie? Well, we've been hearing a lot about tongueties lately but did you know that there are two types?

Anterior tongueties are obvious we can see right away that the underside of the tongue is connected too tightly to the floor of the mouth. This is the kind of tonguetie that's most easily diagnosed and treated.

Posterior tongueties are quite different because they don't look obvious at first glance. The back part of the tongue is restricted rather than the front portion of the tongue.

A baby with a posterior tonguetie may have difficulty breast feeding, but the problems are not limited to that.

Adults with posterior tongueties will often experience clenching, grinding, TMJ problems like pain and tension, and sleep apnea or other sleep disordered breathing conditions. These tongueties can be difficult to diagnose, and not every doctor who releases tongueties knows about them, or how to release them properly, so it pays to do your homework here. An evaluation by an oral myofunctional therapist who's very familiar with posterior tongueties is the first step to addressing this condition and ensuring you get the best possible longterm results.
