Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) expert Dr. David Steensma explains how a stem cell transplant works. Healthy cells, usually from a donor, are given to the patient after highdose chemotherapy destroys the original bloodforming cells. These are the cells that have AML, so replacing them may cure the disease. Younger patients who are healthy may be the best candidates for stem cell transplant. However, older people who are healthy enough may also qualify.
