What is a Torque? (Rotational Mechanics - Physics)

The Physics of Rotational Mechanics plays an essential role in today’s technology. This video explores its central concept: the torque.

In linear mechanics, when a force is applied to a body, the body accelerates. The analogue to a force in rotational mechanics is The Torque: When a body is subjected to a torque, the angular velocity of that body increases, in other words it is subjected to an angular acceleration.

A torque is a mathematical representation of the cause of rotational acceleration. First, the video looks at the 3 factors that compose a torque: the magnitude of the force applied on a rotating body, the point of application of that force relative to the position of the rotation axis, and the orientation of the applied force. In the second part of the video, we review these factors on a white board and build up the mathematical and graphical representation of a torque.
