The TURP (or, transurethral resection of the prostate) is a procedure that surgically removes prostate tissue to relieve the urethra and make it easier for someone to urinate whose BPH is causing lower urinary tract symptoms. The TURP has long been the gold standard for the treatment of symptomatic BPH, and it continues to be the most reliable option for relieving symptoms; however, TURPS also have risks, some longterm, that are not associated with less intense procedures and medication.
