What is an Affidavit?

An Affidavit is a written document in which you certify that all the information provided by you is completely true. There are two important things that you need to keep in mind when dealing with an affidavit. First that this document can be used against you in the court of law. If any of the information provided by you in it is false. And second that all affidavits necessarily created on stamp paper.

Why is it needed?

An Affidavit can be used in many different cases. It can be used in a case where you're incorporating your company, where you are filing for a divorce, where you’re applying for a passport or even enrolling your child in a new school.

For example: when you're applying for a passport you will forward in an affidavit stating that all the information provided by you in the application form is completely true.

Another example could be when you have lost your date of birth certificate and you're applying for a new one and you again forward an affidavit saying that the stated date of birth is completely true. The biggest necessity of an affidavit is for you to forward it as a document of legal proof in those cases where there is no other proof. So for example, if I give you some information or promise to do something in the future I will give you an affidavit for the same. Third.

How do you make an Affidavit?

I stated before every affidavit is made on stamp paper. Once you get a stamp paper, you will then proceed to put down all the information that you wish to certify.

For example:

If I am applying for a passport I will say, I Karan Gupta hereby specify that all the information provided by me including my date of birth, my name, address, and parent’s information is completely true to the full extent of my knowledge. Once this is done I would proceed to sign it in front of a notary public and then I will have a ready affidavit in my hand.
