What Is Ash Wednesday?

Follow
Douglas Talks

Ash Wednesday (which happens on the first day of Lent, the 40 days of fasting leading up to Easter) is a traditional day of prayer, fasting, and repentance observed by Christians around the world. On this day, Christians will have their foreheads marked with ashes as a symbol of mourning because of their sin. Jesus’ sacrifice for us is cause for both joy and sadness. We’re happy that Jesus has saved us from our sins, but very sad about how and why He had to do it. Godly grief over our sin leads us to repentance.
