Can catheter ablation fix your arrhythmia? https://www.amitahealth.org/heartbeat

Mansour Razminia, MD, an AMITA Health clinical cardiac electrophysiologist based in Chicago’s northwestern suburbs, explains catheter ablation, an outpatient procedure used to treat arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat).

The vascular surgeon threads a catheter through the large veins near the groin and up through the vena cava until it reaches the heart. As it moves through the heart and comes in contact with it, the catheter generates a digital 3D map of the heart and its interior for the surgeon to reference. From there, the surgeon either applies radiofrequency ablation (“burning”) or cryotherapy ablation (“freezing”) to destroy tiny parts of the heart muscle that are responsible for the abnormal electrical impulses causing your irregular heartbeat. Patients are usually able to go home after the treatment (Dr. Razminia only asks patients to stay overnight if their procedure is scheduled for late in the afternoon).
