Chickenpox is an condition caused by the varicellazoster virus, and so the medical term for it is varicella.

Chickenpox is characterized by itchy, red blisters that appear all over the body and look like tiny insect bites. These bumps may be filled with fluid that leak. These may form scabs or a crusty appearance.

Other symptoms or side effects are

* fever,

* pain in the abdominal area,

* moderate headaches,

* Malaise,

* Dryness in the throat.

* Loss of appetite

Those most at risk include newborns and young children, adolescents and teenagers, pregnant women, unhealthy individuals with weak immune systems, steroid users, and those with skin inflammation.

Chickenpox is not dangerous by itself, but it can lead to problems like bacterial skin infections, which can be much more serious. In the long term, it can also cause shingles. Shingles is a painful condition characterized by skin blisters. Many years, even decades, may pass between the occurrence of chickenpox and and the onset of shingles.

The best way to prevent chickenpox is to get the chickenpox vaccine. Since the vaccine was introduced in the mid1990s, cases have declined significantly.

If you think you or your child have chickenpox, you should schedule a doctor’s appointment. It's important to call ahead so the doctor can schedule you at a time when there are no other patients in the office. This is done because chickenpox is contagious, and those with chickenpox are actually contagious for several days before the rash develops.

Keep in mind, your doctor's recommendations may vary. Also keep in mind that when dealing with chicken pox, you should rely only on the advice of a medical professional.
