A superstar who got the title of Bollywood's most handsome actor, when other actors used to see him, they used to pray to God that why did he not make me so handsome, why even after giving more than 60 superhit films, he never got the Best Actor award, he was born on 8 December 1935 in a small village of Chiana district, his childhood name was Dharm Singh Dewal, whom we know today as Dharmendra, Dharmendra Singh spent his early life in the village itself, he studied in a government school in Laltan Kala of Ludhiana district where his father Kishan Singh Dewal was a headmaster, later he did his intermediate from Ramgarhia College in 1952, Dharmendra was not interested in studies, so he studied only till 12th and after that left studies forever, Dharmendra was very fond of films since childhood, he used to walk several kilometers to watch movies, one day Dharmendra was so impressed after watching Suraiya's film Dil Lagi That he decided to make a career in acting. Dharmendra watched this film 40 times continuously and he used to walk several miles from his house to watch it every day. Dharmendra has told in his book Dharmendra Not Just a HeMan that his father did not want him to work in films but his mother always supported him. Dharmendra wanted to earn a lot of money but he had a small dream of having his own flat and a car. Dharmendra started visiting the offices of many producers and this continued for many months. There was a time when Dharmendra could not even eat a full meal. Once actor Shashi Kapoor took pity on him and took him to his house and fed him. He had to struggle a lot, after this director Arjun Hingorani gave him a break in the film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tera and this became Dharmendra's first film. Dharmendra got his first film Dil Bhi Tera. He got only ₹1 for Hum Bhi Ra. At that time his fees were very low. He did not have a permanent place to live, so he started living in Arjun Hingorani's garage. Dharmendra looked very good in films.. He worked with almost all the big actresses of that time including Nutan, Mala Sinha, Saira Bano, Meena Kumari in big films. The pair of Dharmendra and Meena Kumari became a hit in real life as well as in films. There was a lot of discussion about their affair and many of their films were also made. Photos went viral
His film Phool Aur Patthar came with Meena Kumari which became such a big hit that it became the first film for which Dharmendra got the nomination for Best Actor and in this film, for the first time, Dharmendra gave scenes without sets and by giving such scenes, he shocked everyone and people criticized him a lot. Meena Kumari supported Dharmendra at every turn, a big reason for which was that she loved Dharmendra very much.
Meena Kumari's husband Kamal Amrohi got angry with the closeness between Dharmendra and Meena Kumari and after many years, he made the film Razia Sultan with Dharmendra and in one scene, he blackened Dharmendra's face.Dharmendra and Hema Malini worked together in dozens of films. When Dharmendra married Hema Malini, Hema Malini was the number one heroine of Hindi films at that time and almost every actor was crazy about Hema Malini at that time but Dharmendra won the battle. Both their families were not ready for this marriage but still when Hema Malini's father died, both of them got married one day. Hema Malini was a Muslim and did not want to leave her religion and Dharmendra was so crazy for her that he left his religion and married Hema. He married Hema Malini on 2 May 1980. Hema Malini and Dharmendra have two daughters named Esha and Ahana. Dharmendra's physique was like that of a wrestler, seeing which many producers initially advised him to quit acting. Many said that he looked like a wrestler so he should return to the village. But a time came when he became popular in Bollywood. He worked in romantic, suspense thriller and action films. By 1975, Dharmendra had become a versatile actor.
