What is Erythritol & Is it Safe to Eat?
Erythritol is an artificial sweetener that is made from corn. That’s strike one and two right off the bat. I share more on why I choose to avoid faux sweeteners in another blog post. Simply being made in a lab does not always mean a bad thing, however; many MANY artificial sweeteners have negative side effects. Strike two is that is made from corn, often from GMO corn unless you are buying USDA Organic.

Erythritol, a sugar alcohol, does occur naturally in foods like watermelon, cheese, some fermented foods, soy sauce, and other foods. Though as we know by now a naturally occurring ingredient is not the same as an artificially crafted ingredient.

Erythritol in particular does not break well down within our bodies and has even been shown to contribute to weight gain and other negative side effects including headache, diarrhea, bloating cramps, and gas. Some people can eat up to 4 teaspoons a day and not experience issues while others have consumed less than this per day and have experienced digestive issues.

To Avoid or Not to Avoid?

All in all, this sweetener is not the worst thing in the world. Especially if you enjoy it and do not suffer from any negative side effects. Give it a try if you are reducing your calorie intake from sugars. Be sure to buy USDA Organic certified though!

If you are looking for healthier options try Monkfruit extract, maple syrup, raw local honey, or pure stevia extract.
