What is Jainism? ☸ Though less recognized in the Western world than Hinduism and Buddhism, the Jain tradition of India has provided invaluable wisdom for millennia. This tradition is renowned for its deep commitment to ahimsa or nonviolence, in thought, word, and action. As part of this commitment, the Jains established the world’s first known animal hospitals. Their strict vegetarianism has influenced Hindu and Buddhist practices, and the Jain principle of nonviolence significantly impacted Mahatma Gandhi ✨, who was raised in a region where Jain traditions were prominent. This presentation will start with an introduction to Jain philosophy and practice for those unfamiliar with the tradition, followed by an exploration of a unique Jain contribution to universal wisdom: the doctrines of relativity—anekāntavāda—which assert that reality is multifaceted, leading to the diverse perspectives and paths found in the world’s religions and philosophies. It will discover the Jain symbol and its meanings.
