In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about Prostate Cancer including signs and symptoms. We also will cover investigations and what happens when you go to see your doctor.

Prostate cancer is cancer of the prostate gland. Cancer is when abnormal cells start to divide and grow in an uncontrolled way. The cells can grow into surrounding tissues or organs, and may spread to other areas of the body.

According to NHS UK "Symptoms of prostate cancer do not usually appear until the prostate is large enough to affect the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the penis (urethra).

When this happens, you may notice things like:

an increased need to pee
straining while you pee
a feeling that your bladder has not fully emptied

These symptoms should not be ignored, but they do not mean you have prostate cancer. It's more likely they're caused by something else, such as prostate enlargement."

Where does prostate cancer start?

Most prostate cancers start in the outer gland cells of the prostate and are known as acinar adenocarcinomas. Many of these cancers grow extremely slowly and are not likely to spread. But some can grow more quickly.

IMPORTANT:

Many of these symptoms are very common and can be caused by different conditions. Having them does not definitely mean you have PROSTATE CANCER. But it's important to get them checked by a DOCTOR. This is because if they're caused by cancer, finding it early may mean it's easier to treat.
