What is Quida Equina Syndrome (CES)

CES has a prevalence of 13 per 100,000 back pain cases and is the result of compression towards the 20 caudal nerve roots, usually secondary to a large, central disc herniation.

spinal cord ends at the upper portion of the lumbar spine.

A Bundle of nerve roots in the lower spine is known as quada equina, which is Latin word for horse’s tail.

The individual nerve roots at the end of the spinal cord that provide motor and sensory function to the legs and the bladder continue along in the spinal canal. Cauda equina is the continuation of these nerve roots which send and receive messages to and from the lower limbs and pelvic organs.

Cauda equina syndrome occurs when there is dysfunction of multiple lumbar and sacral nerve roots of the cauda equina.

The main symptoms are,

Bowel and Bladder Dysfunction,
Sexual Dysfunction,
Saddle Anaesthesia.

You need urgent care if you have these symptoms.
