What is the tripod of the foot?

Understanding the tripod is the first step in improving the way your foot moves.

The foot is beautifully designed and its function relies on relative motions or movement in between the bones. When we lose the tripod our feet will chunk together losing the relative motions.

This is extremely important when trying to improve ankle mobility.

Most people will lose the heel as they move forward into their end range stretch.

Watch someone squat and notice how their heel or heels lift off the ground as the knee can't move forward anymore. This is losing the tripod and missing the relative motions at the foot.

This is why we usually start with getting the heel moving properly in order for the good stuff we need at the midfoot to happen.
