There are three common solutions that can be used when perfoming an eyewash.
Water

If your place of work has a plumbed eyewash station you will use water to flush your eyes in the event of an eyewash. You can also use water in a cup to flush your eyes.

Take that to check the temperature of the water before you flush your eyes. Toohot water could injure you, and toocold water could make it difficult to keep your eyes open for the eyewash.

Can you use distilled water as an eyewash?

Boric Acid

While boric acid can be toxic if ingested or be an irritant to the skin, in very weak concentrations it can be used as an effective eyewash.

Boric acid is antibacterial and antifungal. It is a buffering agent which means it can maintain a stable pH in the eye. It also have tonicityadjusting properties, meaning it maintains a chemically compatible environment.

Saline Solution

Saline solution is made up of distilled water and sodium chloride (salt). at 0.9%, making it a similar concentration to tears and blood.
