Visiting the Cultural Center is one of the best things to do in Tamale, Ghana.

At first the Cultural Center looks a little dilapidated. The central building is in disrepair and the sign is rusted. However, the shops are full of handmade arts and crafts and it doesn’t take much to scratch below the surface and learn a lot about local African culture.

Yes, some of it is fun souvenirs, but ask about most items and there will be a story about where it came from, the tradition and meaning behind it or the artist that created it. Most of the items are from Ghana, but crafts from Burkina Faso and Nigeria, and other surrounding countries find their way here, too.

Masks, fabric, clothing, bead jewelry, home décor, laptop bags with African patterns, beautiful quilts made by hand, painted calabashes, leather ottomans you can actually pack and so many more things are available here. You’re going to fall in love with things you didn’t even know you needed. And knowing that it’s honestly handmade is a real treat in a world of overmanufactured goods.

Then there’s the Tahma Cultural Troupe that rehearses most weekday afternoons which means a free drum and dance performance for you. Note: They don't perform during Ramadan.

WARNING: The people in Tamale are incredibly kind and friendly. If you give them the chance they will steal your heart and be one of the most memorable parts of your trip when you visit Ghana.
