This video explains the differences between a working board of directors and a governing board of directors. Nonprofit organizations utilize both. This explanation will help you define your board and be better able to engage new nonprofit board members.

Working Boards refer to board members that are doing the daytoday management tasks of the Nonprofit that are usually handled by staff. This includes new startup nonprofits and Volunteer led organizations are typically going to be Working Boards. When recruiting new board member to a working board, expectations around the daily duties and tasks need to be communicated and understood.

Over time, as a Nonprofit grows, they may hire staff to take on the daily management of the organization. As this happens, a Board of Directors may transition to a Governing Board from a Working Board. With a governing board, new board members should not expect to handle daily activities as the staff will do that.
