In today’s video, I’m sharing my wheelchair accessible kitchen ideas, featuring home modifications and accessible kitchen for spinal cord injury patients. In terms of design and functionality, wheelchair accessible kitchens are for people with mobility challenges so they can use the kitchen in not just a normal way, but also focusing on safety and comfort as well. For example, a 36" doorway can accommodate most wheelchairs, but 42" is a lot more comfortable. Lever door handles vs. traditional knobs also make doors a lot easier to manage. There are lots of reasons that people in wheelchairs experience challenges when trying to navigate the kitchen. But, there are many ways that kitchens can be modified to make them more userfriendly for people in wheelchairs and otherwise physically challenged individuals. Some of these modifications include cabinet and countertop height, electrical systems placement, appliance positioning, food storage, and sink placement.
