When should I brace for lower back pain and how long do we don a brace

When should I brace for lower back pain is dependent on a few factors. If you just experienced or are recovering from an episode of back pain a back brace may be helpful. Let's discuss the different types of braces on the market. The main three categories are soft, semirigid, rigid and custom molded corset.

The function of lumbar braces is to restrict movement and protect the back. In many cases the lumbar braces protect by limiting range of motion especially in the more rigid braces. The presence of a brace can serve as a reminder to move more carefully in the early stages of an injury. However, we have a segment of people who believe consciously or unconscioulsy that the brace will almost prevent a flare of back pain or prevent future episodes. Ultimately, you should be aware of the pros and cons of back braces to ensure you do more harm than good.

If you have just had your first episode of back pain I prefer a soft brace to allow more natural movement but remind you during periods of time when lifting and doing light activities of daily living. I prefer to wear the brace during active times and don't like having the brace on when sleeping, lying down or sitting. I prefer the use of lumbar supports in siting and special pillows for sleeping or napping.

After the first 3 days after the first episode or a reoccurrence I would prefer people start weaning off the braces during gentle light activities like cooking a meal or putting on shoes to see how they are doing. If you continue to wear the brace deconditioning can occur and the person will adopt different movement patterns that may cause problems in the future.

In addition donning a lumbar brace I recommend in severe cases, not that more than 20 minutes at a time or as little as needed to prevent stretching of areas of the back that are attempting to heal. Must be proactive about getting up because at times back and stretched , but the body does not notice it until the returns to standing resulting in severe. Most braces make it difficult to make a transfer from a chair or locality because it blocks, in some cases, the hip, tendon at the hip specially just the people that are overweight.

Once the pain is relatively under control the most active of daily living are comfortable I prefer not to continue to use the brace. I prefer patients learn how to improve their mechanics when lifting and moving them learn the natural bracing to prevent tolerance for especially heavy with for that patient. One patient heavy lifting may be picking up a gallon milk which is 8 pounds and for others it can be a 50 pound bag sand.
