Our Whirlpool Duet Dryer is not heating (again) but this time I suspect it's the gas valve solenoid coils. Our gas valve solenoid coils have never been replaced, and are the likely cause of the inconsistent gas valve behavior. As they get warm after a few heat cycles, they stop working.

This repair may look similar on other frontloading gas dryer models from Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Kenmore and others…

My mom made a comment asking if I needed money to buy a new dryer when she heard I needed to fix this old Duet again. C’mon mom, we don’t buy a new car when it needs new brakes… and when it needs new brakes we fix that ourselves too ;)

If when testing with the front panel off you are seeing no glow from the igniter, first check the Thermal Fuse for continuity…    • Whirlpool Duet Gas Dryer Not Heating ...  

As I tested my dryer to my initial surprise the igniter heated up and the dryer fired up and cycled on and off as expected a couple times. Later after about 10 minutes when the igniter would warm up to relight the dryer, nothing would happen, no gas, no heat.

There are several videos that show how to test the Solenoid Coils to see if the resistance is within spec, I’m assuming mine are ready to be replaced, and at only $10 for the pair, they’d be good to have on hand, if yours have never been replaced.

We tend to run the dryer on medium or low heat most of the time which is why these have likely lasted quite a long time.
