African Roots: Kwame Nkrumah (1909 1972) was a Ghanaian politician and revolutionary. He was the first prime minister and president of Ghana and an influential panAfricanist. Nkrumah was a founding member of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) . He spent many years of his academic career in the US and England. He returned home to lead Ghana to independence in 1957 and become its first president. However his vision of a USstyle union remained unfulfilled.
