As daily newspapers are decimated by hedge funds, who will perform the public watchdog function protected by the First Amendment? Dave Krieger, the former editor of the Daily Camera, asks a very important question on ownership of newspapers Dave Krieger has been a Colorado journalist since 1981. He joined the Rocky Mountain News that year as a City Hall reporter and covered the 1983 race for Denver mayor in which Federico Peña upset favorites Bill McNichols, the threeterm incumbent, and Dale Tooley, the longtime district attorney, by covering the city with yard signs that urged a new generation of Coloradans to “Imagine a Great City.”

Krieger then took a quick 30year detour into the nomadic life of a sportswriter, covering the Broncos, Nuggets, and four Olympic Games. Ultimately, he earned his own column, which he authored until the day the 150yearold Rocky closed its doors in February 2009. His column appeared in the Denver Post the day after the Rocky closed and was published there through January 2012. From there he moved to KOA radio, where he teamed with Dave Logan to form the afternoon drive tandem until June 2014. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
