Nowadays, the Italian Royal Army’s tanks are notorious for their insufficient armament, especially during the Second World War. This reputation was wellfounded, as their tanks were equipped with, at best, 47 mm (1.85 in) guns. Although this armament may have been adequate in the war's early stages, by 1941, it had become obsolete, struggling to inflict damage on the newest Allied tanks. The introduction of the selfpropelled Semovente series, which featured larger caliber guns, somewhat alleviated the issue. However, combat experience against the Soviets in 1941 revealed the need for even more powerful weaponry. Consequently, by the end of that year, the Italians were forced to address the inadequacy of their arsenal and so they commenced work on mounting a modified 90 mm (3.54 in) antiaircraft gun onto an M41 tank chassis, resulting in the creation of the Semovente M41M da 90/53. Despite offering a substantial enhancement in offensive capabilities, only 30 units were produced, limiting their impact on the war.
