My working theory is that it’s a combination of factors. Autistic people are very sensitive and constantly processing sensory stimuli. Secondly, many (mostly)neurotypical people make thinslice judgements, that is snap judgements about whether a person is “one of us”, within a matter of seconds.

Even autistic people who mask a lot can give away certain “tells” that they deviate from the norm, because you can get so far by masking and “faking normal” but at some point the mask will begin to slip.
